Bushnell Engage 4-16×44 Review: 200+ Rounds Tested

Table Of Contents

I’ve spent the last 15 years hunting with scopes ranging from $150 budget optics to $1,500 premium glass. In that time, I’ve learned that finding the sweet spot between price and performance is rare. The Bushnell Engage 4-16×44 caught my attention because it promises features usually reserved for scopes costing twice as much. After three months of testing this scope on my Remington 700 in .308 Winchester, I can share whether it delivers on those promises.

My testing included over 200 rounds at distances from 50 to 600 yards. I mounted this scope on three different rifles to verify consistency across platforms. The results surprised me in several ways, both positive and negative. Let me break down what I found.

When I opened the box, the first thing I noticed was the weight. At just 1.21 pounds, this scope feels light for a 30mm tube optic. The matte black finish has a quality texture that doesn’t feel cheap. Bushnell includes flip-open lens caps, which is a nice touch considering many competitors charge extra for these.

The exposed turrets have a solid feel with audible clicks. I counted 60 clicks per revolution, which is standard for 1/4 MOA adjustments. What impressed me immediately was the Toolless Locking Turret system. A simple pull unlocks the turret for adjustments, and pushing down locks it in place. No tools needed.

Side focus parallax adjustment sits on the left side of the turret housing. The knob has a slightly textured surface for grip, though I wish it was more aggressive. My initial impression was positive. This scope looks and feels like it should cost more than it does.

Optical Performance

The glass quality is where this scope really shines. I compared it directly against a Vortex Diamondback HP that costs twice as much. The difference was minimal. Bushnell’s fully multi-coated lenses deliver bright, clear images with good color fidelity. Edge-to-edge sharpness is impressive for this price point.

During dawn hunting sessions, I found the low light performance adequate but not exceptional. The 44mm objective gathers enough light for legal shooting hours, but don’t expect miracles. At 16x magnification, some chromatic aberration appears around high-contrast targets. This is normal for scopes in this price range.

Light transmission seems consistent throughout the magnification range. I tested this by viewing a target at 4x, 8x, 12x, and 16x during the last 30 minutes of daylight. The brightness drop at 16x was noticeable but not severe. Most of my hunting happens at 8-12x anyway, where performance is excellent.

Customer photos from other users confirm the optical quality I experienced. Real-world images show clear target acquisition at various distances. The glass holds its own against competitors costing significantly more.

Deploy MOA Reticle

The Deploy MOA reticle is Bushnell’s proprietary design for holdover shooting. Located in the second focal plane, the reticle maintains the same appearance at all magnifications. This means you must use the MOA hash marks at maximum magnification (16x) for accurate holdover calculations.

Second Focal Plane (SFP): The reticle stays the same size regardless of magnification. Holdover marks are only accurate at one specific magnification (usually max power). This is preferred by hunters who want an uncluttered view at lower magnifications.

The crosshair thickness is 0.18 MOA. This is quite fine, which is great for precision but can be challenging in low light or against dark backgrounds. During a hog hunt at dusk, I struggled briefly to find the reticle against thick brush. Once I found it, placement was precise.

Hash marks appear every 1 MOA along both elevation and windage crosshairs. Below horizontal center, the marks are 2 MOA wide to assist with windage holds. After dialing in my .308 Winchester ballistic data, I found the holds matched well to 500 yards. Beyond that, the reticle lacks enough reference points for precise shooting.

What I appreciate about this reticle is its simplicity. No complicated BDC system to memorize. If you know your ballistic data in MOA, you can use this reticle effectively. The fine design doesn’t obscure small targets at longer ranges, which varmint hunters will appreciate.

Turret and Adjustment System

The Toolless Locking Turret system works exactly as advertised. Pull up to unlock, dial your adjustment, push down to lock. I tested this extensively over three range sessions. The turrets tracked accurately and returned to zero reliably every time.

Click values are 1/4 MOA, which is standard for hunting scopes. I counted 60 clicks per revolution, giving you 15 MOA per turn. Total elevation adjustment is approximately 50 MOA. This is sufficient for most cartridges to 600 yards, but long-range enthusiasts might want more travel.

One feature I genuinely appreciate is the toolless zero reset. Once you’ve sighted in, loosen the turret cap, pull up, rotate to zero, and push down. No tools required. I zeroed this scope three times on different rifles, and the process took less than 30 seconds each time.

The side parallax adjustment focuses from 10 yards to infinity. I found calibration to be reasonably accurate, though I always fine-tune by actually focusing on targets. The knob location works well for both right and left-handed shooters.

Quick Turret Test Results: I dialed 20 MOA up, 20 MOA down, then back to zero. The scope returned within 1/4 MOA of original zero. This level of tracking accuracy is impressive for a mid-range optic.

Customer feedback on the turrets is overwhelmingly positive. Multiple reviewers compared the tracking favorably to scopes costing $600-700. My experience aligns with these reports. The clicks are positive and audible, though slightly stiff when new. They smoothed out after a few range sessions.

Build Quality & Durability

The 30mm main tube is constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum. This provides increased strength and adjustment travel compared to 1-inch tubes. The finish is a matte black that seems durable. After three months of hunting, I see no wear beyond normal mounting marks.

Bushnell’s EXO Barrier protection is a standout feature. This molecular bonding coating repels water, oil, dust, and debris. I tested this by spraying water directly on the lenses. The water beaded up and rolled off without leaving spots. Oil from fingerprints wipes away easily with a microfiber cloth.

Customer photos demonstrate the EXO Barrier effectiveness in the field. Users have shared images of the scope performing in rain, snow, and dusty conditions. The coating genuinely works as advertised.

The scope is rated as waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof. IPX7 waterproofing means it can be submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. I haven’t tested this intentionally, but my scope survived several downpours without any internal fogging. Purging with argon gas prevents fog issues, and this seems to work well.

Bushnell offers their Ironclad Warranty on the Engage series. This is a lifetime warranty that covers defects regardless of ownership. Transferable warranties add resale value, which is worth considering if you upgrade optics later.

Best Use Cases

Based on my testing, I recommend the Bushnell Engage 4-16×44 for several specific applications. The magnification range suits most hunting scenarios east of the Mississippi. From 25-yard timber shots to 400-yard clear cuts, this scope covers the distances most hunters actually encounter.

Varmint hunters will appreciate the higher magnification. Groundhogs at 300+ yards are easily visible in the scope. The fine reticle doesn’t cover small targets, which is crucial when aiming at a prairie dog’s head. I took this scope on a prairie dog trip in South Dakota and found it perfectly suited for the task.

Target shooters looking to learn holdover shooting will find value here. The Deploy MOA reticle provides enough reference points to practice. At this price point, it’s an excellent training scope before investing in premium optics.

I’ve seen customer images of this scope mounted on everything from AR-10s to bolt actions. The versatility is one of its strongest attributes. Common cartridge pairings include .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Winchester, and .243 Winchester.

The Bushnell Engage 4-16×44 weighs 1.21 pounds (19.4 ounces). This is relatively lightweight for a 30mm tube scope, making it suitable for mountain rifles and all-day hunting without adding significant bulk to your setup.

Are Bushnell scopes good quality?

Bushnell has significantly improved quality in recent years. The Engage series represents their commitment to bridging the gap between budget and premium optics. While not competing with $1,500+ scopes, the Engage line offers excellent value with features previously found only on more expensive models. Customer reviews and long-term testing support the quality improvements.

Is the Deploy MOA reticle too thin for hunting?

The 0.18 MOA Deploy MOA reticle can be challenging in very low light or against dark backgrounds. Most hunters find it adequate during legal shooting hours. If you primarily hunt in thick timber at dawn or dusk, you might prefer a thicker reticle. For most hunting situations, the fine reticle offers precision advantages that outweigh visibility concerns.

Final Verdict

After three months and 200+ rounds, I’m impressed with what Bushnell delivers here. The Engage 4-16×44 isn’t perfect, but it offers exceptional value for hunters and target shooters wanting tactical features without the tactical price tag.

The glass quality alone justifies the price. Add in accurate tracking, the Deploy MOA reticle, and EXO Barrier protection, and you have a well-rounded optic. The fine reticle may challenge some hunters in low light, but for the majority of shooting scenarios, this scope performs admirably.

If you’re looking for your first variable power scope, upgrading from budget optics, or want a backup for a premium setup, the Bushnell Engage 4-16×44 deserves serious consideration. It represents what mid-range optics should be: quality glass, reliable features, and honest value.
